The Way Ahead
2009-12-30
When it comes to this time of year, that's when I like to take stock and also think about what might lie ahead.
Looking back, as always, there are highlights that spring to mind, and I'm also aware of things that could have been approached differently.
In 2010, in different areas of our church life, not least the question of the redevelopment that is proposed for the area around the church, we already know that there will be challenges and opportunities. The planned development will have an impact on the town centre for decades to come and so it's important that all concerned do their very best both for now and for the generations that will follow on.
For some of our church members, this promises to be a truly memorable and exciting year. I'm thinking, in particular, of those who are planning to be married in a few months' time.
There are others who know already that 2010, for a variety of reasons, may well be a difficult year and we remember them in our prayers.
What strikes me this year - and every year - when I look back is how we can see God at work in our midst. It's always a reason for giving thanks. It's also a reason for hope for the future - a reassurance. Our experience of God's presence with us in the past is a comfort to us as we move forward - no matter what lies ahead.
